Its Location

Canarsie is located at the south-eastern shoreline of Brooklyn, not far from beautiful Jamaica Bay and the famous Sheepshead Bay. It's roughly 15 miles from Manhattan.

Canarsie Empowerment on My Heart

Today Canarsie, strong in tradition, is three hundred sixty nine (369) years old. Its rich borders span approximately three hundred and twelve (312) square blocks. Starting at Jamaica Bay on the south, it moves to Paerdegat Basin and Ralph Avenue on the west and then to Ditmas Avenues, Avenue D and Linden Boulevard on the north, and then down Louisiana Avenue to Fresh Creek Basin on the east. Conveniently located just ten (10) minutes away from Kennedy International Airport and forty (40) minutes away from Manhattan. Canarsie is extremely close to the heart and pulse of the greatest city in the world.

Spanning over three (3) centuries, it is a combination of the old and new, the traditional and modern. It is a combination of a small suburban community and part of a major metropolis. Canarsie's proud traditions are deeply rooted in the American culture and heritage. Canarsie is truly the personification of our great nation.

Charles Barron
District 42 - Council Member - Democrat

Background Information

Council Member Charles Barron has been a community activist for 25 years. He has extensive experience on the local and national levels. In 1969, in need of a vehicle to express his desire for justice, Barron joined the Harlem branch of the Black Panther Party.

In 2001, Barron was elected to the New York City Council. He serves as Chair of the Higher Education Committee and is a member of the committees on Land Use, Consumer Affairs, Women s Issues, Landmarks, Public Siting and Maritime Uses. In this role, he has sponsored and cosponsored significant pieces of legislation that have impacted the quality of life of all New Yorkers. In the winter and spring of 2003, Barron delivered $280,000 to senior citizen programs in his district. He also played an integral role in getting the Meals on Wheels program restored to the city budget for seniors in his district.As chair of the Higher Education Committee, Barron spearheaded the restoration of over $10 million for students at City University of New York colleges.
